Honestly, I don't know what I was expecting but this movie didn't have nearly the pacing and fun that Bride of Chucky did.
Also, with it including one of the last bigscreen performances by John Ritter
and a veiled reference to Hellraiser in the mix, the
scope of horror connectiveness was larger in sequel before "Seed of Chucky". The idea is promising, the premise already
set up from the conclusion of the last film and the casting was good, so what was missing? Don't really know -- one
usually doesn't go into a film like this to dig as deep as you would with something like, oh say,
Year of Living Dangerously or even The Serpent and The Rainbow.
But then the Child's Play series' success has been unexpectedly distended on into a few decades now, so there's
SOMETHING with the concept that makes it worth continuing.
What's needed is, perhaps a refresh on the initial concept -- taking a typical kids' toy of the era and making it scary as
hell. What would be the contemporary? Could Chucky's "seed" have had some tie in to "Yu-Gi-Oh!" like Tarot cards? I dug
the Ed Wood "Glen Or Glenda" reference but it didn't seem to fit any scheme set up by prior Chucky films. But then, I
guess you've got to ask yourself whether the "Chucky" franchise, the decades-old Cabbage Patch Doll spoof, ever fit easily
into the horror genre.
